I saw you in a bar, you were close but far;
You talked to another with your senses ajar.
I looked back just when you looked back;
A spell fell across the crowded room,
A beacon of light in the mundane gloom.
I caught my breath or was it yours?
Seemed there was some hidden clause.
In a mental snapshot I captured that look.
I saved that image and I tucked it away,
To keep it fresh, never to fade or stain
And over time to play it again and again.
I will remember that moment of familiarity:
That distant unfathomable strange clarity,
As if we had achieved some easy parity.
I looked away, restless time held sway;
My hopes, wants, needs all malleable clay.
In different circumstances we may have spoken;
Who knows, it may not have been some idle token?
Was it lust, or just some glance to cast to dust?
As you went to leave we exchanged glances,
No speech, no reach, just a welcoming smile.
No longer a stranger, but an evening ranger,
And you were gone into the night,
I felt strangely exhilerated, washed and light.
