I am Richard Trebilcock, an English poet living in Surrey. I was born in
North London. At the age of 12 the family moved to East Knoyle, a small
village in Wiltshire i.e. boasting two shops, two pubs, and a garage.
My adolescence was a challenging period as I adjusted from an urban to rural
life, and a completely different culture to that which I had known in London,
and of course, the natural challenges of growing up.
After leaving school I worked in forestry and later joined the RAF.
Following my career in the airforce, I went back in to education as a
mature student, and eventually obtained an engineering doctorate.
Apart from poetry, my hobbies include travelling, gardening, and dancing.
As I have always considered physical exercise as an essential part of
maintaining physical and mental well being I go to the gym several times
a week. It is not something I necessarily enjoy but rather it is a
lifestyle choice.
I have always been able to write with relative ease, but
it wasn't until later in life that I discovered poetry
was the medium I wanted to use to express myself.
I read somewhere that you don't discover poetry,
but poetry finds you; this was certainly the case with myself.
My inspiration for my poems comes from many sources.
However, as I have a strong family connection with Cornwall
this has certainly inspired a number of my poems.
I do not believe there is such a thing as good or bad poetry but rather that some poems are more penetrable
or understandable than others. That is, some poems have a tendency only to be comprehensible to the person
who has written the poem. I believe a poem, whatever its subject, should be reasonably comprehensible
at the first time of reading, or at least attract a re-read.
